There are really only two - fiction and non-fiction - everything else is just a sub-group of these two.

The different kinds of books are called "genres" (pronounced "John ruz").
The basic two categories are Fiction (made up stories) and Non-fiction (facts).
Then, they fall into many different sub-categories, such as realistic fiction, science fiction, fantasy, folklore, etc for fiction, and Reference, biography, technology, applied science, etc. for non-fiction.
Ask your librarian for a list of the Dewey decimal system, and you can see how to find each type of Non-fiction book in any library.

Hardcover / paperback...
There are many classifications of books.
What are you classifying?
I mean, even "heavy / light" could be "kinds" of books.
