Great question!

What I can first suggest is to configure your keys to the following.

W = Forward
S = Backwards
A = Left
D = Right

This way you can easily navigate with both hands. The mouse will handle aiming and shooting. You will thank me later on if you decide to stick with shooters.

When first starting out playing FPS (First Person Shooters) you may want to set the game to the easiest mode. There isn't anything more discouraging than playing a game and ending up dead in the first 5 mins. That just sucks.

FPS develop hand to eye coordination. This will come in time and sometimes it will get frustrating but, this is what the challenge is all about.

Use Your Environment.
In Half Life there are plenty of places to hide, peek out around corners and see what is there before running right into it. Use boxes, pillars, walls to hide behind and plan your attack. And of course there is always my favorite, run away!

Move.
While engaging and enemy just don't stand there. Strafe left and right, make yourself a harder target to hit. This will become evident especially while playing real people online.

Weapons.
Always have a suitable weapon for your situation. In other words don't bring a knife to a gun fight. Conserve your ammo. There may be times that you must make kills with one or two shots (yes it is possible) Always reload before going into a situation. Half Life has ammo scattered all over the maps. You may have to keep looking to find, but its there. Certain areas of Half Life you don't have to kill everything, just enough to clear your path. Don't go out of your way to get to your objective. This in turn will save a lot of ammo.

This is just a few things I can advise you on how to be a better player. If it was easy no one would buy it and Valve would wither and die but, thats not the case. This is the worlds greatest game...400+million games sold to date.

So keep trying, keep Gorden happy and watch the headcrabs :)

i still scuk at first person games, so here goes. what ive fond to be the best system for getting the "feel" of an fps is the buddy system. many fps fans actually practice this and have probably beaten halo and halo 2 on co-op way before they ever did on one player. so find a friendand play the hell out of half life cause its a great game (sorry for the assumption that you have the ps2 version cause i prefer playing fpss on consoles better...mouses are too jumpy and suck). so do this or just jump in to the game, set it on the hardest difficulty you desire and play til you can beat it.
