My first home was affordable and small yet perfect for a single individual. It was a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom garden home. You don't want to stretch yourself too thin and you want to have money for unexpected expenses and to furnish, decorate, etc. as you desire.

I agree with krzylove ... stick with what you can afford ... homes have expenses after the fact, and you still want to be able to enjoy life. You can always add on or trade up if it's wanted and needed later on.

Get the home that you can afford. Leave enough of your income after your mortgage payments for savings, vacations, needs and entertainment purposes.

I have a townhome and I love it. Great size for starting out and less hassel, as it is maintence free!!!!
