I've had a baby male rat and an elderly female gerbil (3 1/2 yrs) to co-exist for a couple of weeks in an aquarium untill I got the rat his own cage. Then the gerbil died about a month later....I don't think they would have gotten along had the situations been reversed though, my rats like to eat small meaty things. Both creatures require different enviroments and feeding, and I thnk there would have been dominance issues if the rat had been older and the gerbil younger.

from what i know no they cant share a cage because rats need big bared cages and gerbils live in special glass/ plastic tanks . the rat might eat the gerbil

No, in a word, come from different enviroments and the rat will dominate the gerbil, not a good idea.
