There are several, but I recommend Vikram Seth and Kiran Desai. Desai was a 2006 finalist for the Man Booker Prize for "The Inheritance of Loss" - an excellent book.
Salman Rushdie is probably the most famous (or infamous) of contemporary Indian authors, because the Ayatollah put a contract out on his head. His books are very good as well.

Rabindranath Tagore. He's an Indian author and I found his stories interesting. I can't remember the titles of his literary works but his are one of the few I enjoyed reading in my Asian Literature class during my high school days.
