Where are you from? A tsunami-struck region? If that's the case, then, uh, yeah, the Red Cross was responsible for saving probably thousands if not many tens of thousands of peoples' lives. The provision of warm clothing, shelter, and potable water are generally things the Red Cross likes to dole out to needy and disaster-struck folks who hate the USA.

The Red Cross has been around since the 19th century in its various forms. See link for further detail. If you judge from impartial information it would seem that it does as much as it humanly can for the poor given its resources.

I thought the red cross was a charity, if that's so, they don't have to do anything for anyone so whatever they do is a bonus!

I think they do more than some of these "not for profit" organizations that are supposed to help the ill and the poor.
