I am writing an essay on Gothic and Romanticism in visual art (and literature). Can anyone suggest some good references, artists or writers? And where can i find reviewers?

Look at William Morris -I think he was heavily influenced by the 'Gothic style' and the ideas he thought it stood for.

He was pretty influential, and wrote books/essays as well as his more wider recognised textile prints, stained glass and other forms of visual art etc.

I'd also suggest you look at Dante Gabriel Rossetti (for his paintings) -he was even a friend of Morris (although Rossetti did have an affair with his wife...!)

Here's a link to get you started -the v&a have loads of relevent stuff:

good luck! xx

William Blake and Henry Fusili are two recommendations!
for literature I would recommend Edgar Allen Poe (obviously) and Northanger Abbey, by Jane Austen.

Check out Piranesi- he was an Italian arist who did weird, depressing images of the insides of imaginary prisons:

Here's all about him:

Totally goth.
I found out about him from a book I read. Here's the link to it on Amazon:

If you have the time, check the book out. It's all you ever wanted to know about the origins of Gothic art, literature, etc.
