Scent is probably the strongest catalyst from such things becasue it is so tied in with the subconcious. We don't normally acknowledge all the things we smell at any given time and when we encounter a scnet that is similar to something that was present duriing some past even it immediately takes us back there. Break baking, perfume, flowers. All such things cause such reactions. Sometimes, memories are all we have left...I know every time I catch the scent of Channelle No. 5 perfume it takes me back to my first wife. The ONLY love worth the description...so yes I know exactly what you mean...

They say that smell is the strongest memory trigger of all the five senses. In an episode of M*A*S*H, Hawkeye gets extremely sick, with the chills, sneezing, swelling, and a serious rash being the symptoms. When the other doctors cannot find anything wrong with him, they call in the psychologist. After several therapy sessions, it gets discovered that Hawkeye's illness stemmed from how a patient had came in from being in a swampy war zone, and his smell triggered a subconscious memory of a terrible experience Hawkeye had with his bully cousin in a boat when they were kids. Hawkeye had looked up to his cousin so much, that he had, in his mind, changed what had happened with the past event, and his illness was his physical result of his mind not being able to deal with the truth of the matter. The psychologist tells him that odor is the most powerful memory trigger there is. Once he came to terms with it, his illness ceased as well. The show was based upon historic and medical research of the Korean War, so I would say there is truth to it.

I believe that this is possible. If you had something special happen or there was a smell that stood out wherever you were then yes I believe that if you smelled the smell again at some point you would make a connection. The same could apply to like a song. Or almost anything for that matter.

I do know what you mean. It happens to me when the smell is associated with a specific occurances that may be really bad or really good. I think the most profound experiences, have distinctive associated smells. I can remember those memories immediately. I really dont know how long that memory smell will last, because olfactory neurons dont last long

Yes - smells are known to have strong connections with emotional memory, probably because the part of the brain where smells are 'processed' is near the limbic system (involved in emotion) and the hippocampus (involved in memory).

I know exactly what you mean.

My memory is not as nice as yours, but my very first school had a unique disinfectant type smell to it.

If I try to remember what it was like there all those years ago, I can hardly remember a thing but, if I smell that same smell, I can remember everything as if it was yesterday !

I had heard that smell is the most emotive sense and therefore conjures up memories (good or bad).
