i Heard it was early on in the bands existence. Someone who thought the band would fail, said something to the effect of "This is gonna fly as well as a Lead Zepplin." The band took it to heart and ran w/ it. Lead = heavy metal, Zepplin= flying baloon thingy. May be false, but that's what I heard.

The band completed their first (Scandinavian) tour as "The New Yardbirds". After some discussion, the name "Led Zeppelin" was chosen as a new name, based upon a name (Lead Zeppelin) that Keith Moon had suggested during his discussions with Page about a possible supergroup. Moon got the name from John Entwistle's term for a bad gig, describing it as "going over" (some sources say "going down"[11]) "like a lead zeppelin".[12] The group deliberately dropped the 'a' in Lead at the suggestion of their manager, Peter Grant, to prevent "thick Americans" [8] from pronouncing it as "leed". The band was originally formed in 1968 by guitarist Jimmy Page under the name The New Yardbirds in order to fulfill some performance commitments booked before the break up of the original Yardbirds. Robert Plant was the singer. After some concerts, the band's name was changed to Led Zeppelin, after Keith Moon, drummer with The Who, suggested "you'll go over like a lead Zeppelin". The word "lead" is misspelled deliberately to avoid confusion, fearing it might be conceived of as the "lead Zeppelin" (as in "lead singer"), as opposed to a Zeppelin constructed of the metal lead.

The new band that former Yardbird Jimmy Page was putting together with John Paul Jones was going to be called The New Yardbirds. Keith Moon of The Who commented, “that’ll go over like a lead zeppelin.” They took that for their name, but changed the spelling of “lead” so that their fans would know how to pronounce it.

Jimmy Page was drinking with Moon and Entwhistle, who were bitching about their band mates Daltrey and Townshend. They joked about the two of them starting a band with Jimmy, and one of them said "Yeah, that will go over like a lead balloon". When Jimmy formed his own band, he remembered this and thought "Lead Zeppelin" would be good, both from that conversation and the heavy/light contradiction similar to the band named IRON BUTTERFLY. They decided to drop the "a" so Americans wouldn't mispronounce it.
