Patricia, first you need to replace your old fixture, the new ceramic ones are not at all expensive, under 5 bucks at lowes or home depot. While you are there get you an extra packet of light chain, you can add as much as you need depending on the height of your light fixture, and you can even get a cute little FOB for the end of the chain. Total monies you will spend probably under 10 bucks total. Be sure and turn off the main power source before you start to replace fixture, they are not hard to replace at all, you might try one of the new corkscrew lightbulbs to be more energy efficient, and they last for a lonnnng time.
Go to the light girl go to the light!!!! Be careful!

Well Nate, firstly, you can get a good set of strings for 10 bucks and an okay set for 8. You said you have D'Addario strings, i do too and i bought a set of 6 strings for 8 bucks. Change your strings whenever you break a string this will keep your strings sounding great and its only 8 bucks!

Several people have already told you to replace it. Another option is to add a light bulb adapter that has a chain switch in it. This screws into the existing fixture.
These are cheap and extremely easy, they just screw in.
This assumes the switch is broken in the on position.

Replace it with a new fixture. They are only three dollars for the ceramic ones, less for plastic. It's only two wires; turn off the power, remove the wires, and attach them to your new fixture. These switches are not serviceable.

try getting a chain that is used on a drain plug. It will be stronger than a regular string.
