Windows XP has literally dozens of updates that have been released for it since it was released. You probably never went to Windowsupdate.com and got any of them, so you computer keeps prompting you to install them and you're probably not reading the message all the way and telling it to go ahead and install them, or, you haven't clicked on the yellow shield and then download. Go to update.microsoft.com and run an express scan. Select everything there and get the updates. Do it a few times over until there are no updates left. I suggest doing it before you go to bed cause some of them will take a while.

The other possibility is that you have spyware, there is a specific program that does this and mimics Windows' yellow shield and update warning. If it is that, AVG Anti-spyware will kill it. You should download AVG AS anyway to make sure you stay spyware free.

Your computer downloads updates automatically form microsoft whenever you use the internet, it is possible to disable this but it is not wise, the best thing to do is go ahead and install the updates like it says, if you are clicking the 'shut down' button when you switch off the computer, this should install them the next time you boot. see the links for more info.

Your PC is getting updates automatically from microsoft, if these are being applied I don't know why it is doing so every night. Its possible you have automatic updates set to only inform you when updates are available and aren't actually installing them.

Go to system properties and set automatic updates. Also go to http://update.microsoft.com (IE only) and get all the latest updates.

Microsoft release updates on the second tuesday of each month.

if you are like most people you've got software that upgrades itself every time you start your computer, like your anti-virus,web cam,spy ware anything you install that is in your start up menu will run all by itself and update by itself when ever you boot up, or when ever there's an update for that product. welcome to
"Start Menu Hell".
