The material is Nomex. It is a material that is chemically similiar to Kevlar. Nomex is weaker than Kevlar, but more fire-resistant. Both Nomex and Kevlar are made by DuPont. The reason that firefighters still die in fires is mainly because the flames are not the only threats that a firefighter faces. They also face poisonous gases and smoke, shockwaves from explosions, falling debris, and collapsing buildings. Also, no material is perfectly fireproof. All materials can be destroyed by fire if the temperature is high enough.
