Yes it would be best to go that little bit further away just for your own peace of mind. Your best bet would be to meet up with a group their are many on the net that meet at regular intervals doing it this way you meet with acceptance you also have a chance to meet people who prefer to dress there is nothing wrong with it. Society looks down on it yes so what that is narrow mindedness. but for your first time out i advise you be careful check out where your going is suitable.
If your convincing you need to be know you wil be safe whether your female male or a crossdresser there is always someone out their who wants to take advantage of you if you are Uk send me an email i will out you onto a good site that meets regular and are very friendly
Be proud of you are

First and foremost, have you both considered marriage counseling? This would be a first step in the possibility to resolve the issues between you. Is your need to crossdress the ONLY disagreement you have between you? It seems there is something underlying that goes beyond crossdressing. Do you dress in front of her, or do you keep it private and out of her sight? Flaunting it can only make matters worse at this point. Beyond that, what has your wife done as far as researching what crossdressing is – and what it ISN’T? Many times there is a lack of the facts about crossdressing and people tend to accept what other people’s opinions and views are about it without ever taking the time to educate themselves. There are far too many ‘sensationalist’ sites on the internet that hurt the crossdressing image rather than providing the truths that need to be brought out about the subject. If she will agree to do so, have her look at the information on the site listed below and see if it serves to provide her with some facts that she wasn’t aware of. Possibly this will help BOTH of you in coming to some sort of compromise or agreement and understanding about why some men (AND WOMEN) have this need.

It'll eventually be inevitable that people you know will see you. No sense in dodging the bullet. Although it may be better because if you want to keep it up you might feel comfortable around people you do not know. It's easier to take insults from a stranger.

Do you care so much about being read? What's wrong with being you? If you are still a little closeted (and that's pretty normal with first timers) try to find a local group of like minded people to hang with.

It might be best to seek the anonymity of a big city like London or Manchester. visit www.trans-mission.org and go to the chat room and see if anyone knows of something easily accessible to you.

As far away as possible if you are frightened of people you know seeing you, then at least you can gain the confidence to do it in your home town.
