Where are your headphones connected ... the speaker jack or a different jack ?

Verify the "mute" settings in volume control if you are using separate audio out jacks.

If the headphones work via the same jack that the speakers do not ..... then the problem is obviously with the speakers.

Plugging your ear phones my have altered your monitor type in

-control panel - sounds and audio devices - volume tab - speaker settings advanced - check that the monitor type is correct as there are lots of different configurations (one type is for headphones) - mine is set to monitor stereo speakers

good luck

maybe your speaker wire is bad. I'm assuming you're plugging in on the back and not using the headphone jack on the cd drive.
