Smoky eyes are usually deep muted colors Grey, plum, brown, deep green.

start with a eye liner pencil in black, gray,or deep brown, deep plum, deep green. for close set eyes Out line your eyes from center to the out side lid top and bottom.Wide set eyes all around eyes top and bottom.
Smudge that with a q tip.getting a blended line.
Then apply eyeshadow in the same smoky color as eyeliner.Around the lid of the eye.And half way down the bottom outside Conner.
Try studying some latest Fashion magazines like Elle, or Vogue, allure.

'mac' has a great grey/black eyeshadow.
alternatively you could apply black eyeliner (not liquid) on the top eyelid smudge it in and then draw a very thin neat line right where the roots of your eyelashes are on top and bottom.
