We keep being cautioned that "people are different out there." While this comes mostly from other city folk, a few things lead me to suspect they might be right.

We have a nice time when we're in the town, but. "It's different when you're just tourists" is the consensus.

I pointed out that I wasn't the type to show up on neighbours' doorsteps announcing my arrival with a pie in hand, but get "Maybe that's what you have to do..."

If you're in a rural area -- what's the general feeling on refugees from the city?

If you've made a similar move -- what did you do?

The town is within commuting distance to where we live now, but seems pretty free of urban transplants. I'm leery of us looking like the advance party for a pile of outsiders...

I'd assume we just move and be normal, but the comments are making me wonder if there's more I need to know. Do we need to make noticeable attempts to become part of the community; if so, how?

Depends on your definition of rural and which city you are going to move out of. I hate it whe people from the city move here and then try and change the way we have always lived because they want things to be more like where they came from.

be friendly and remember people are people everywhere. I personally like a smaller place to live. may take a little time to get acquainted but people are friendlier in a smaller town. if you have something in common with any of your neighbors use this as a springboard. be ready to help the neighbors as they are ready to help you.

People in rural areas are more reserved than urban people. You need to develop a trust with them on a one on one basis. They will be unimpressed if you make them out to be a "dumb hick" and try to impress them that you are more "worldly."

Overall, be yourself, try humility, and things will go smooth.
