Sri Lanka.

Endless things to do - temples, markets, beaches, hiking, canoeing, surfing, trekking, resorts, gem mines, spas.....the list goes on and on and on.

And it was the most obscenely cheap country I have ever been to. We stayed a few nights in a gorgeous five star hotel for $40 per night. Incidentals like food, beer, transport was just off the wall cheap. In the end, we were just giving money away.

The economy coupled with the loss of tourism from the tsunami and the ongoing conflict between the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan gov't has made rock bottom prices even lower.

Obscenely cheap aside, it is unquestionably one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The varying landscapes are sublime, the nature and wildlife are surreal, and the people are so gentile and kind.

I cannot say enough nice things about Sri Lanka - it truly lived up to it serendipitous name.

The best bang for my buck I would say was Budapest. Or at least it was 10 years ago. It is a friendly interesting city and it was very cheap. There are a lot of baths there and you can go for a very cheep spa holiday even now. Back then I was more a backpacker and I stayed in a nice guesthouse for $15 a night and went to the zoo for 50 cents. The national museum was about $1. I really enjoyed it.

I will also mention Thailand although it wasnt' my most thrilling voyage, but done right you really can do well for quite cheep. I was alone so I stayed in fairly nice hotels, the most expensive of which cost me about $85. This is expensive by Thai standerds but for the quality of hotel it was quite cheep by western standards. I had the best time in Koh Phangnan. I also got the best bang for my buck there. It was cheep and fun and I stayed at this gorgous resort with a palace for a room that only cost me $50 US a night.

I loved Egypt! I got so much for exchanging my American currency into Egyptian Pounds. But be prepared to haggle for good prices in the Khans/Souqs/Bazaars.
