This question bothered me so much that I was working at Nottingham Trent university.there was a professor there,so asked him the same question,His answer seemed odd so I went and ask hundred of people,90 % said the same answer.
its one of those questions that makes no sense but is the absolute truth.......!
answer later.

This question is clever but only because of the way you have worded it, especially the "Think very carefully before you answer" part, and mentioning your professor's "odd" answer being the same as 90% of others asked.
Without those details to provide the intrigue, your question would've had a lot of people saying "Ta for the two points".

You've made people think, you've made me think, but...
As it is, simple in both question and answer and not the conundrum you make it out to be, this is simply a well worded riddle, of which the answer is of course second place.

He'll be the new man in second place for if he takes over then the race is still going. You never mentioned the guy who used to be in second place taking over again so we can only assume he didn't

Is this a trick question... i'll cover both bases the man in 3rd place would move up to 2nd, and the man in 2nd would move down to 3rd

I dont know which guy you were asking about.

by 'he', i'm assuming that you mean the man in third place.

if you're in third place and you overtake the person in second place, who must logically be directly in front of you, then you move up a position and the person who you overtook moves back a position.

you end up in second, and the other person ends up in third; no other position is affected

in any case, it's the taking part that counts, and in this great race of life we all know that there can be only one winner; a certain Mr. Tobias Tortoise who cleverly took it steady whilst Mr Horatio Hare was snoozing by the tree.
