In the USA you can stop payment with an indemnity bond which costs 2% of the face value of the check. Now, if you sent it USPS, I hope you took out insurance. for a few dollars you can, I believe, cover the item for up to $500. In that case, you would get enough to cover the indemnity on a check up to $25,000. When you buy insurance you have to take a service that involves tracking, which also helps.

I gather you mean in Auzzie speak a 'Bank Cheque'. Ring Bank first to find out what your rights and obligations are and there's.
You should have a receipt of when you purchased it? Go back to the bank with your receipt and they can electronically trace it to see if it has been cashed or not. If it has been cashed then you need to ask how that could happen as ID should be shown that the name on the cheque and the person cashing it are one and the same.
If it has not been cashed and appears to have been lost, cancel the cheque, a penalty may apply and have another issued to be collected by the person from the Bank branch nearest to them. Or, register it by post to ensure it is delivered to where it is going.
