If you can fill it a bit that helps. You can simply stuff some crumpled newspaper in the hole. You do not want to fill a deep hole as it takes forever for the patch to dry and it will crack.
I would recommend dry wall compound. You can buy little cans of it at any hardware store. Let it dry completely and then sand OR you can also use a damp sponge to level it out (instead of sanding).

Your home center sells screen just for that problem. It has an adhesive back. Cut it larger than the hole and simply spackle over it. A wide putty knife. Will give you a smoother finish. Don't attempt to cover with one coat. Two or three thinner coats will be better.

coer the hole with fiber tape. instead of buying an18# bag of drywall setting compound.you can use plaster of paris. apply 3 coats over the tape. allow to dry in between coats. the patch will become smoother with each coat. sand and featheredge with a medium or fine sanding sponge, texture and paint.

Plaster of Paris usually does the trick. Then just sand it down and paint.

A product called Durabond. It is much stronger than other products, but is just as easy to use. It does not sand as easily as drywall compound and doesn't shrink when drying. Because of that, do not overfill hardly at all.
