It has long been a reproach against Vegetarianism that it produces no great men. Its opponents all too willingly forget such names as Buddha, Plutarch, Wesley, Milton, Sir Isaac Newton, Shelley, and other epoch-making Vegetarians, who have helped to mold the destinies of the world ; and they sneer at the simplicity of teach-ing which is to them foolishness and a rock of offense. To the long list of Vegetarian heroes and giants must now he added the honored name of Count Leo Tolstoi, the Russian novelist and social reformer.

Intelligent children may be more likely to be vegetarian as adults, suggests a University of Southampton-led study published on-line by the British Medical Journal today.

The study led by Dr Catharine Gale of the University's MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre looked to see why people with higher IQs appeared to be less likely to suffer from heart disease.

'We examined the records of 8179 men and women aged 30 years, whose IQ had been tested at the age of ten. Twenty years on, 366 (4.5 per cent) of participants said they were vegetarian. Of these, 9 (2.5 per cent) were vegan and 123 (33.6 per cent) stated they were vegetarian but reported eating fish or chicken,' comments Dr Gale.

'Those who were vegetarian by the age of 30 had scored five IQ points above average at the age of ten. This can be partly accounted for by better education and higher occupational social class, but it remained statistically significant after adjusting for these factors.'

Recent evidence suggests that vegetarianism may be linked to lower cholesterol levels and a reduced risk of obesity and heart disease. This might help to explain why children who score higher on intelligence tests tend to have a lower risk of coronary heart disease in later life.

'One explanation for the link between higher IQ and vegetarianism may be that brighter children grow up to think more about what they eat, which in some cases has led them to become vegetarians,' continues Dr Gale.

Vegetarianism is the practice of not consuming meat, with or without the use of other animal derivatives, such as dairy products or eggs. Some vegetarians choose to also refrain from wearing clothing involving the death of animals, such as leather, silk and fur. Veganism, sometimes called "strict vegetarianism", excludes all animal products from diet and attire, whether or not this involves the actual death of an animal (dairy, eggs, honey, wool and down feathers). Vegetarians are found in countries across the world with varied motivations including religious, financial, ethical, environmental, and health concerns. A person who does not eat meat but does eat fish is not a vegetarian; although many such people call themselves vegetarians, they are in fact better described as pescetarians.

Everyone in my family from my dads side have high IQs and none of us are vegetarian though. My Great Grandad was a lieutenant in the army and my Dad is a very good man who is a teacher of Mathematics and Physics. I'm not vegetarian because I cant give up burgers! I'm 15 and have completed my Cambridge A Levels.

I don't know many vegetarians, but the ones I know are not firemen or cops or soldiers. They are musicians, teachers, and ex-hippies. So I don't think you can draw that conclusion.

Vegetarians are what they are to save animals or preserve their health. Some don't even eat dairy products or eggs.

I was once a vegetarian for 18 months. Then I went home and my mom cooked her specialty, roast beef. What could I say? "Mom, your cooking is not good enough for me." No, so I ate the roast beef!

In general, a lot of heavy food like beef just weighs you down, so be a hero and save a cow!

NO that's silly, there is more non-vegetarian cops, firefighters and military personel than there are vegetarian. Plus your idea of "hero" and mine must be very different, because I would not describe these people as "hero's" The firefighters, yes. And maybe a few in the army depending on what they do....

Interesting. I have never met a vegetarian who had one of the occupations you mentioned. I know a few cops, a few firemen, a few soldiers and plenty of doctors and none of them are vegetarians. Then again, I try to stay away from vegetarians, vegans in particular. We don't generally get along for some reason.

I agree with BabyRN. None of the doctors, cops, nor soldiers I knew were vegetarian.
