Imagine a huge spiderweb. Spray that with a fine mist of water. now each and every little sparkle is a computer. Some are just drawing information off the web (like you) and others also offer information.
This web (World Wide Web. .hence the www in addresses) covers the entire globe.
Some computers are powerful servers, some are just a persons store bought laptop.
The real thought is how does the search for information cross check all that information and report back to you almost instantly (yahoo or google searches)

In my humble understanding of the Internet, all the info is located on various company servers. Servers are like a big Hard drives, so Internet servie providers for example have really big ones, so they keep all the info on them. They'd also have a back-upservers (that's if they have any brains and money to buy them), in the case one is hacked in, destroyed in fire etc. So if an individual or a business wants to have a website, they'd "Host" it on one of the many Internet Host Server (company they pay to display it). So this 'host' is like a 'hotel' where anyone can 'hire a room' or like a shop in a mall. Hope this broadens your understanding as jargon can be confusing. Some people have their own servers, so they host their own websites, it's not that expensive to get a small server. Server is then constantly on, not swithched off like a home computer, so that people can access what's on it at all times. In the place where I work they are locked in cooled dust proofed rooms and stored on the shelves of what looks like big fridges, but it's constant temperature, not as cold as frizer, as they need constant cooling due to being on all the time.
