I went to Langkawi for New Year s and was surprised by how late the Sunrise was. We had breakfast at 7 am and it was still dark as night. I believe the Sunrise was only about 730 to 8 am. Is there any explanations for that?

By the transitional position of the sun to the equator, the sun arises at about the same time every day in Malaysia....as it does in Singapore and othe equatorial areas. The day/night cycle is also about the same...giving nearly 12 hours of light and twelve hours of darkness. Only countries further north or south suffer much from the orbital changes of the earth....to wit countries in Northern Europe have 24 hours of darkness but in the other hemisphere, they enjoy 24 hours of light.

The reason for this is because Malaysia, a few years ago decided to have a single time zone. That means that the time in Kuching in Sarawak, Borneo must be the same time as Langkawi even though Kuching is at least a 1000 kilometres east. Langkawi is in the westernmost end of the time zone so the sun will rise at a later hour than at places further east. It will also set later.

Langkawi is at Kedah. Therefore, kedah is situated on the equator so hence,at exactly 12noon, if you're at the giant eagle, the sun will be on top of the eagle casting a deadly shadow. Which means the epuator is so big that the sun will rise a little late, and will set a little early.

As Langkawi is about 5 degrees above the equator the sun rises and sets at roughly the same time throughout the year. Daylight is approximately 7 am to 7 pm all year round.

As icaruscatfish has pointed out, Malaysia and Singapore are on permanent "Daylight Savings" time. That is the reason for the "late" sunrise, which isn't really late; it's only that the clocks are fast...
