ok i realised everytime i leave my comp and it goes into screensaver or auto switches off the monitor, i lose internet connection.
i cant surf webpages, i get 'page canot be displayed'
i cant connect to my mmporpg game
but i realise anything dat stayed connected b4 the screensaver, stays connected, like my MSN messenger, Bittorrent client, and even the mmporg game if i had Alt Tab and AFK for quite a while, except for webpages where if it was on yahoo.com and after returning from screensaver if i click on another link it gives me 'page canot be displayed'

i have just formatted and reinstalled windows, so it cldnt be a corrupted file somewhere (unless i am that unlucky i got it corrupted again so quickly) and it cldnt hav been a virus sine the format sld hav wiped it

currently i installed zonealarm, avg antivirus, msn 7.5, maplestory, some video codecs, adobe reader, winrar, all of which i have had before the problem started

and i just remembered i used to have this same problem on my laptop about 5years ago. it was on Windows ME however and it was using a different ISP and different modem (motorola smting..sry cant rmember) however my eventual solution was just to turn off screensaver mode (which is probably why the battery went dead)

i'd appreciate if i dont get answers like 'turn off your screensaver' cuz..its not really a solution!

asad:: i had just formatted and reinstalled Windows last night so i think that pretty much rules out viruses. the screensaver is the default WinXP screensaver, i have nv dl any other screensavers, nor had i initially touched the screensaver settings before or anytime the problems began
sigh all im left is contacting the ISP
but i cant throw out my PC its barely 2 years old! lolz..is mac really dat good? but i cant stand being stranded with not many programs built to be installed in mac..

Good to see you have invested so much time in writing such a long question to solve your problem. I'll try a step by step approach to help you solve your problem.

STEP 1 - First things first
Visit http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do a full online system scan.

STEP 2 - Clear up your system
I'm assuming that you are running an original version of Windows here. You should invest in Windows Defender 1.0 (which is out of beta version), and turn all security features [especially automatic updates] on.

STEP 3 - Registry Cleaup
Viruses and hacks can sometimes invade your registry - and cause mayhem and chaos everywhere. Search Google for 'free registry cleaners', and clean up your registry.

STEP 4 - Check the screensaver
Is the screensaver you are using downloaded for somewhere. Remember, seemingly innocent things on the web may be hacks or spyware deep down. If you are using a screensaver that came with Windows, there is no point performing this check. If you have downloaded it, uninstall it, activate a Windows screensaver, and try again.

STEP 5 - Contact your ISP
Ask you local system administrator or your ISP if they have any problems on their end - although this is unlikely, its always good not to leave a single stone uncovered!

STEP 6 - Total Cleanup!
Although you have stated that you have done this already, keep trying. Format all hard drives, reinstall Windows, and install an antivirus such as Norton before doing anything else.

STEP 7 - The last resort
If nothing else works - throw the PC out the window....take a breath of fresh, clean air, and go buy a Mac!

I hope this works, contact me [asadkhawer@yahoo.com] if you have any questions or other problems.

Like others have said, check the drivers for your graphics card, and the power supply. If neither of these work, check the heatsink is in place correctly (the big fan covering the processor) because if it isnt the computer switches itself off so the processor doesnt overheat. Make sure you when you check the legs of the heatsink/fan that they are all clicked into place, you should hear/feel a click.

I think you have two problems that's simple to fix, First turn off your screen saver by right clicking anywhere on your desktop and choose properties, click screen saver tab and in the drop down list choose none than click apply. next if you see a monitor power button under the screen saver properties click it and in power schemes choose presentations than apply and OK that should take care of the problems your having
