Yes, it is harder to learn an instrument when you are older, but that is no reason not to try! Similarly, the best time to learn a foreign language is when you are very young.
There are several reasons. A young brain is more open to new ideas and has less prejudice and bias. Young people are used to trying new things. They don't mind failing for a while, but not giving up, and eventually succeeding (like riding a bike, tying a shoestring, or whistling). And young people don't have to earn a living, so they have more time to practice.
Music education improves thinking ability and creativity, so jump in and get started, no matter how old you are! But you have to be willing to hang in there for the eventual success. It takes a while, but is very rewarding. For example, when you are feeling down, it is a wonderful relief to sit down and play music. All your cares just drift away!
Playing guitar or keyboard is good, because you can perform a song without having other instruments to play with.
A famous composer was asked if music is enough for a lifetime. He answered with another question, "Is a lifetime enough for music?"

To Mr. Sir: How do you define proficient? There is no way in just twelve lessons you are playing Voodoo Chile or Texas Flood. Guitar requires a commitment, and it is also a skill that is lost without use. It's not like a bike where once you learn its there, it requires upkeep. The biggest thing is playing what you like to hear, and having fun with it. I have/still am self teaching (for the most part), and its a bit slower going, but I learn to my own preference.

Yes it is. As you know by now if you don't take care of yourself at an early age you will suffer from arthritis and that will impede you from playing just about any instrument. Guitar lesson are not difficult at all. I became a proficient guitar player after 12 lessons.

its kinda hard in the beginning. But eventually you should be able to get it down. I dont think age matters for guitar. or an instrument actually. good luck. im 16 and learned most of the instruments now. kinda late, but still good right? like i learned guitar 14? french horn 15, but now im in marching band. So i guess it doesnt matter how old you are, rather, just how hard your willing to work at it. good luck :).
