Generally no, they don't test pregnant woman for drugs either - unless they have a good reason. Each physician and hospital has their own protocol and rules on how/why they will decide to test.

But yes, they can do a tox screen of the baby's meconium which is more accurate than a urine or even a blood screen as the the meconium has been stored inside the baby's body for awhile and will show drugs the mom may have used during the latter part of her pregnancy.

They will test the mothers blood whether they know it or not. They can tell by the placenta if you did do drugs and of course they check the baby out and if you have drugs in your system then they will be calling social services and you might just get your baby taken away from you.

How is that crazy?

Its true that they have the authority and obligation to do so, however it is not routine practice unless there is reason to believe that the mother is using. I believe they put the baby care in the hands of a social worker if the test comes back possitive. I hope this is not something you have to worry about, if you are having trouble with an addiction, there is hope and help, please contact your doctor or call your local substance abuse hotline to take the first step. Best wishes and health to your baby and you!

They can now. My friend smoked pot through her whole pregnancy (kid seems fine, thank God) and she was terrified they would test her and take her son away. They did not test her and she thought it had to do w/ the way you act in the delivery room. Example, if you talk about drugs or look sketchy, they may be suspicious. Also, if you are using government assistance such as Medicaid, they reserve the right to test you whenever they want.

Yes they sure can...I have a 6 week old and every check-up I had they would test my urine for sugar levels and narcotics...my doc informed me though. And Im the type of person who doesnt even like to take tylenol unless its very necessary. They also tested my baby and I after birth because one of the discharge nurses had to let me know that both I and the baby were negative for narcotics in our system.

Yes they do, for some reason, scumbag parents think it is okay to still do drugs while pregnant. If there is drugs in the baby's system, they report it to the police so that baby doesn't have to grow up in a druggie home!

If they suspect they should... yes. A child suspected of having drugs in it's system is not a good thing though. The mother could lose her child if the child test positive for something illegal or dangerous.
