I think it's a matter of people not realizing what they have until it's gone. It's common for people to want things they see others have, like it's better than anything of theirs. It's almost as though people believe that the lives of others don't contain any complications or suffering or mistakes or choices or heavy decisions. In the end, we must realize that none of us lead a perfect life for that does not exist.

Therefore, the other side is not greener. Everything just seems too good to be true from a far enough distance.

okay.... it's an old saying..... nothing's "wrong" with the side that's a bit faded, BECAUSE there is no faded side. They both are the same! The point is that no matter what happens to you, your always going to think somebody else has it just a little bit better than you (there grass is "greener"). WHEN in REALITY everyone has problems, and noone's situation is really any "greener" than yours.
Hoped I helped you to understand.

The grass is NOT greener on the other side. If the grass is greener on the other side, then the guy with the greener grass doesn't think your grass is greener now does he? The message that this proverb is trying to stumble through is that everything always looks more attractive when you don't have it. I'm sure there are millionaires crying themselves to sleep every night because they don't live in a trailer park. Just face it: sometimes nobody envies you. There has to be a bottom and that bottom is probably you.

the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence is an idiom referring to wanting what other people have, because you feel you are lacking something, then when you get what the others have you realize that it was not all that great.

That's the same as the pavement is grayer on the other side of the road and there is nothing wrong only one goes faster.

People simply don't bother slapping a new coat of paint on it as often as they should, for whatever reason....I kind of like faded things :)
