I pay the fee for one but if I want additional units there is no discount on the monthly fee.

Yes,
DVD recorder with built in Hard Drive. No monthly fees. Set record times even use TV Guide from Sunday paper to input show codes and have recorder record them. Plus you can record to hard drive, CDs, and DVDs. And, it can also record from coaxial cable, component cables, and DV camera cable.
DVD recorder 80GB HD goes for like $220 at Best Buy, Circuit City or even Walmart's.

Series 1 Tivo doesn't require a monthly fee. You will not get any of the guide data and will only be able to record by time/channel, but it will work.

Series 2 or Series 3 Tivo with lifetime subscription fees paid will also do the trick

Not for your TV. However, with your computer you can pretty much get any show at any time -- if you have a cable connection. No dial-up, as it is too slow.
