I think that it is hard to learn how to swim on your own. I would recommend looking into a class at an athletic facility that gives swimming lessons. After you learn how to swim and you decide you want to swim competively, you should probably start out with a summer swim team and then after you learn the strokes and techniques, move on to a year-round swim team. I don't think that you can "learn swimming all in one go."

Basics can be learnt in one go. Developing one's strokes takes a while and being able to swim FAST takes years. Even now, competitive Olympic swimmers are still improving their strokes, training to go faster, and many of them have been swimming for a decade or more.
