if you mentioned which anti spyware, anti adware, and anti virus programs you have, it would help. Also, do you use Internet Explorer or any other browser to surf the net. And do you use P2P programs for downloading. And what do you use your comp for mostly? All of these could have an effect on your performance.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

I was a dedicated Norton user for several years until two years ago when my computer was wiped out by a virus. When I bought my new computer I followed the advice of a local computer repairman and protected it with this combination. 1.) Windows default firewall. 2.) FREE AVG 7.5 anti virus. 3.) FREE Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. 4.) FREE Spyware Blaster anti spyware. I have used this combination of FREE security programs for two years now and have had no virus or spyware problems, and my computer runs noticeably faster than it did when I used Norton.

There are many clever answers I could give to this, but I will jsut stick to this: dont use windows. There are several GNU/Linux distributions out there and they all run fast with no threat of viruses, spyware, etc. I reccomment mandriva using KDE since its very easy (graphical install) and really does work quite well...I suppose the biggest difference is that you will have to learn how to click on a star instead of a start button.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html
