What are the objectives of research?

I am doing MBA and want to know more about reseach methodology. steps involved in research procss, research objectives, research problem, how does a researcher select a problem, various parametric tests, its limitations, research design, & factors of research design etc.

At the most basic level, I would think the objective of research is to add to our knowledge of the world around us. After all, research isn't used to study what we already know.
