If solipsism were true, every masterpiece ever made, ever book ever written, every working engine and telescope and map would be of your own mind's creation. Every bit of technology and art, all love all hate, all pros and cons, everything would be your own creation. It seems unlikely that any an individual mind would create so much and have it all make sense. Of course that's a common argument against solipsism.

Who knows, we could all be batteries for the Matrix, no?

If you're really a solipsist, I don't exist, so what do you care what I think?

I think it's the most rejected theory because it's the one everyone considers first. How do I know you exist? Is everyone a figment of my imagination? What if I'm lying on a table somewhere with a machine to simulate reality?

I also think it's used so much in movies (The Matrix) and books (Robert Heinlein), that it gets a lot of exposure, so even people who don't know anything about philosophy still hear about it and consider it and then reject it. That's a lot of people.

Also, really, it's hard to imagine that there are six billion people out there. How weird is that? I mean, two billion people lie to children that there is a Santa Claus because they're all in agreement that on one day each, every child should have a present. Just too difficult to explain, a lot easier to think we're alone here. But then, it's too weird to think that all of this is an artificial construct, so they reject solipsism. Makes for good movies, though.

Solipsism will never be embraced in popularity because nobody wants to give anybody else credit for their reality, and nobody wants to be responsible for their reality.
