Public transportation is by far cheaper and less problems, car may be paid for means little. Gas prices are on the rise car repairs are expensive and you forgot that your vehicle has to be insured. Younger drivers pay higher rates. The type of vehicle that you drive will affect the Insurance rates. Should you become involved in an accident the rates will climb accordingly.

Depends on where you live. I live in a small town in Germany and work 20 kilometers away. Public transportation is almost non-exhistent in my town (2 buses a day). So I really don't have a choice. In the town where I work the situation is better but a yearly pass costs over $400.. would still be cheaper then owning a car.
I goto Barcelona Spain often. Cheapest parking I can find is Euro 20 per day. But you can buy a daily, use on all methods of transportation, ticket for Euro 16. That is cheaper and you are not looking for parking when you move around. No gas, insurance or maintenance.
So I would say yes.. public trans is cheaper then owning and operating a car.

Depends how far u are traveling. If u have say a bus stop next to ur house then im sure it would be cheaper, but if u have to drive to a bus/metro stop many times they charge for parking also. I would say just try to add up the costs of both and compare the differences. For me in DC its cheaper and i deal with the same amount of hassle just to drive myself.

Public transportation is cheaper but less convenient and slower. here in southern California if you don't have a car your screwed.
