I am travelling to Taiwan soon, and I will need to use the internet about as much as I need a cel phone. I am worried about wifi compatability issues there with American laptops as well as international roaming charges with cel phones, and would like advice about what is easiest and most affordable to travel with and without. Thank you so much for your time and help!

bring your own laptop. no compatibility issues with wifi. buy a cell phone locally in taiwan. they are cheap and you can use them locally and just buy time as you go. you can also buy a phone card for your calls back to the US. if you bring your laptop, check out skype. with a simple headphone and microphone set-up you can call home cheap or even free.

I have brought my lap top to Taiwan for business trips more times than I can count and I have never encounter any problems. Roaming with and American phone, however, is not such a good idea. First of all most American cell phone companies requires you to call them and tell them that you will be roaming and they will charge you quite a bit of money for you to do so. This is what I do. I go to Taiwan and get a local Taiwan SIM card. After I get it, I call and change my voice mail greeting of my American cell phone (it will cost a little bit more to call international) and tell the American callers that I am in Taiwan and if they need to get a hold of me, call my Taiwan number or I will check my voice message from time to time; if your American friend REALLY need to reach you, they will call your Taiwan number. You will need at least a tri-band cell phone (900/1800/1900) for Taiwan. Most Sonyericsson phones have tri-band and if you don't have a tri-band phone , you can get a phone in Taiwan relatively cheap. Furthermore, there are so many different interesting models of cell phone they have over in Asia that we just don't have here in the USA. Good luck.

Laptop with WiFi in Taiwan is more advanced than the US models. There shouldn't be any problem. Some coffee shops like MR. BROWN in Taipei have Wifi you can use.

Cell phone - rent one at the airport. Or buy one if you speak Chinese or a friend can help you out. It's awesome to buy cell phones there, not cheap, but so many models.

Do not rent anything. Laptop would in probability have Chinese windows, and rental prices of both them and cell fones are outrageous. If you have a triband phone, bring it but make sure that it has both the 900/1800 frequency. USA uses 1900. Buy yourself a phone there if you wish.
Bring your laptop - most hotels have DSL in rooms (but not the cable to your PC so bring that or buy). power in Taiwan is same as in USA, gowever, most outlets are 2 pin, so bring a 3 to 2 pin AC adapter or one of those flat splitters.

Buy a sim card right at the airport - they do speak English there, and there are 3 or 4 cell companies side by side in the terminals.

I even have traveled to Europe regularly with a computer for greater beneficial than a decade and in no way had a challenge. All you have chose is the appropriate adapter to plug your computer into retailers the place you circulate in Europe (not all ecu worldwide places use an identical variety retailers). Do set up something (ex. Skype) and replace your anti-virus & different courses until now you leave homestead. internet speeds in cafes, and so on. are actually not consistently rapid or maybe inn internet won't be super.
