If minimum wage per hour is about 5 dollars, it means if they work at least 8 hours, they will get 40 dollars a day. And that in a month is 1200 USD, which is quite a lot.

1200 USD is considered a lot, even in Middle Class countries. And USA, the cost of living is easy with 1200 USD.

I don't know where the last answerer is living, but the US minimum wage is a mere $5.15 (not $6.75, although the democratic congress is now trying to raise the minimum wage to I think $7.25 over two years.)

Not all janitors make minimum wage. Higher paid janitors I assume could be considered middle class but no one who earns only minimum wage is middle class.

According to 2006 figures, any one person who has at least $9,600 a year of income is above the poverty line. But YOU try to live on that. For two people, 13,200, three people, 16,600 and so on.

1200 USD is really not that much. Let us also not forget that in many minimum wage jobs that person isn't going to be allowed to work 40 hours every week. Assume this person does have 1200 USD though. Some of that will be taken away for taxes. I have a part time job making minimum wage and I had about 20 USD taken out in taxes last week. We'll say this person worked four hours and had 40 USD taken out for taxes each week. They now have 1040. Maybe they'll get lucky and have relatively inexpensive rent. We'll say 350 USD. 690 USD remaining. Now he needs to pay his utilities (electric, water, garbage). This will cost at least 100 USD. We're left with 590 USD. Now the guy needs either a car or public transport. Transport wouldn't cost a lot but if (if) he has a family he may want a car. If he does that'll be another 200 USD for the payment and we'll say 100 USD for insurance. We now have 290 USD. That's all this guy has all month for food, gas money, clothing, and any other products he may consume. That's just $72.50 a week. That's an average pair of name brand tennis shoes.

When you break it down it really isn't a lot at all. Just imagine if this guy needed to repair his vehicle or see a doctor. There's no money for insurance. He better hope he stays well.

14,000 a year is not a lot when a lot of janitors have families. That is considered poverty and a person can hardely support a family with that money
