Probabilistic causation is extremely insightful, actually, but it's not the end-all, unpredictability is always at work. . .

And no, the predisposition to cancer should not make them become a smoker either. I don't smoke, and if someone were to give me those statistics then I would do my best to prevent-it. Smoking would not become an option for me (a non-smoker).

Ahhhh, which brings us to "does the cigarette exist" :)

Factually, I believe it is not possible. We crave that which we feel we need. Used to read stories about guys living to 110 down in Brazil and their trick was to smoke everyday. Interesting question, but it brings in Sartre - I would reference him for that.
