a thesis is a statement you make by reading something and forming an opinion based on fact then backing up your arguement or opinion based on the text you read as well as experience or other sources of info.
for example, someone could read the song of Roland and argue that the christian king was really the antichrist, that would be the thesis of the paper...
and then the writer must support the thesis and use examples from the text-such as the christian kings failure to love anything but war and fails to love his own men until they are actively dying or killing others for him ,as well as other facts from the text
a thesis is a personal thing and sometimes one story can have many arguements and conflicting ones and each thesis can be validly supported

I'm assuming that what you want to know is not about building a phd thesis. If that was so then you would not have asked on this site but consulted your peerage.Follow these steps, in case u r interested:
1.think,talk,visit libraries for checking catalogues and lab. facilities.
2.Formulate a theme for the monograph;
3. Write the astract for the monograph, including chapterization and purpose. This should be clear.
4.After this homework and visits, or even simultaniosly, consult your supervisor or guide for acceptance and suggestions.He/She should have confidence in your abilities.
5. Ultimately yor thesis would have to be sanctioned by a board or council, who may be from your faculty, or, for writing advanced stuff that should be okyed by some format[ committe, board, etc] of advanced studies, which would not limited to your faculty members. Here the going may get tough, more so in case you want grants, stipends/fellowships amd other expenses such as for travel,etc.
After clearences, begin to work on it and all the best!

In academia, a thesis or dissertation is a document that presents the author's research and findings and is submitted in support of candidature for a degree or professional qualification.
