Narrative poetry tells a story revealed by a progression unique to itself. There is a rising action, a climax and a falling action.
Love and a Question is a ballad (see below) written in 8 line stanzas (octaves)
The ballad is a narrative poem with stanzas of two or four lines and sometimes, a refrain. They are written in straight-forward verse, seldom with detail, but always with graphic simplicity and force. Ballads are generally written in ballad meter, i.e., alternating lines of iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter, with the last words of the second and fourth lines rhyming
This poem illustrates the theme of Life Struggles in the perspective of a newly wed couple. The couple spends time walking threw the cold trying to find a warm place to stay for the night. When they finally arrive at a place where they can probably stay for the night they are found practically begging for permission from the owner of the home. The newlywed couple has taken the courage to go into the world without anything, but still their love conquers their fears: fears that would normally would destroy a marriage especially in its early stage. They have found a way to let go of the pride and asked humbly for shelter. This is a problem that usually adds to life struggles. Many times when people are struggling they tend to not want to take a hand from another person. However this couple overcame their pride and asked for help, making it one less obstacle they had to face. Also, the title says much about the theme relating to life’s struggles. When you think of love, it is not common for the average person to think of a question at the same time or to have questions in general. In this poem, the question arises of shelter for one night, but the author insinuates to the reader that there is fear in their hearts for worry of the following nights to come. The whole irony of the poem makes the reader want to read more and wonder if there is more to the couple’s story. In conclusion, the theme of life struggles pertains to this poem in a way usually not conveyed in literature. When people decide to get married, they usually have many of the things and future secured for them as well as a couple. This is not the case in the poem written by Robert Frost. Here we find that there is a struggle on its own where many questions arise and the future of the couple is not sure. The struggle for their first night’s shelter is still a question to what their future might hold.
