When a parachute is opened in mid air, then why does a small parachute(or whatever it is technically called) comes out first and then the big main one? If it is to help in releasing the big one from the bag, then how is the small one released? Can you tell me about it in detail?

Small parachute is called a "drogue". As stated above, it is used to pull the main chute out of its pack.

If you watch footage of B.A.S.E jumpers, you'll see them actually hold the drogue 'chute in their hands when they jump, then release it to pull the main 'chute.

The drogue parachute is in a small pocket at the back of the main parachute. By pulling the cord, the poket opens and the drogue is free. It get "pulled" up by the air resistance, and extract the main chute.

easy...the little one is to create enough force to take the compressed larger parachute out. So basically, the little one drags the big one out!
