...not rich people with a lot of cars, but rather junkers and beat-up cars in the yards, driveways, and every possible open spot on the street?

Duh, there's no where to drive them (they ARE islands). ;-) Seriously, its because of the real estate issues there. Open, available land is hard to find there, and what is available is very expensive. So there aren't too many "Junk Yard" Bobs buying a few acres and turning it into a junk yard like there in most other areas.. Around here, if you have an obviously junk vehicle that can be seen from a public road, there will be people who stop by and ask if they can haul it off in return for the vehicle. Usually they'll even pay you something for the vehicle. Anyway, they don't have much of that in Hawaii. With few junkyards, what are people going to do with their old cars? It's illegal to sink them in the Pacific and its too expensive to drop them in a volcano. So they sit and rust away as reminders of the past.

Because they are living on an island. To go out and do any serious driving would only have them driving in circles most all of the time. And so to save on fuel and energy, cars are simply left at home in the driveway. Make sense???

Do you know how much traffic the average guy has to go through each day? It's madness. and when the car breaks down, they'll need another one fast. There's usually one for the man, and one for the wife...

Lol. I've noticed that, too. There are whole towns that are just junk yards. Maybe it's too expensive to move them?
