Good question. The answer is it all depends. I am male and in law enforcement so yes I have when off duty.

Circumstances determine the situation. I have picked up the party crowd at 2 or 3 a.m. when they are left stranded and walking home on the highway in the middle of the night.

I have picked up some people after a long hot more than 110 degree day who needed help.

I have passed by those who look like drug addicts.

I have not stopped for anyone carrying a sign.

I use my gut feeling as to the need. Sometimes there is a need to get someone from the country side to the city. And sometimes you just need to keep on driving.

I have done quite often. Especially while living in a small Spanish town where not so long ago it used to be quite common to hitch a lift from one of the locals travelling between town and beach areas. Less and less people do so anymore as there are more 'outsiders' moving into the area and the locals are more wary.
Have also given lifts in UK but not quite as readily. Don't tend to do it anymore these days.
Hope it helped.

Nope. You never know who you're getting into your car. It could be the love of your life or a cold-blooded murderer...or both!
