It is simply because they are wicked and not willing to pay back the money. Next time, before you give out any money, ensure that the person is responsible.

No-one borrowed money from me nor will they, thus they can't tell me anything about their financial situation. Hate to agree with the Bible but neither a borrower nor a lender be, or somesuch.

People don't understand responsibility these days and there's not much encouragement too either

You know the anser to that one, they are not your friends, and remember it was said, "Never a lender nor a borrower be." Well, next time, don't lend out any money.

There are terms for such people, like “cadger”, “deadbeat”, “scrounger” etc. You should know about them… There is no “why”, just “because”: Because there are other people, like you described as “naïve” and they lend to these cadgers money.

Consider it an investment...

A wise friend once told me: "If you loan a friend money and you never see them again, it's money well spent."

They are just trying to confuse you. Just ignore them, they are likely Christians, and don't give them the satisfaction of confusing you; just let them have your money. And if they need more give them more.
And at night when you kneel to pray, bless them and their money. Bless their babies too.

Why? Because they don't want to pay you back. Didn't you figure that out on your own?
