example/gorilla//
In the past, gorilla scientific classification had one species (gorilla) that was divided into three subspecies. Each of these subspecies was distinguished from one another by their geographic location in Africa.

In 2001 mitochondrial DNA research and morphological variances have led to the scientific reclassification of gorillas. Under the new classification gorillas are divided into two species, the eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) and the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla). It is thought that the two species diverged from one another about 2 million years ago and both have two subspecies.

Well, I remember hearing something about hippos. They were believed to be in the same family as rhinos and elephants, but DNA analysis showed that they are actually only distantly related to them.

Right now, the more species that have DNA tests done, the more they have to change classifications. But I think the most sweeping change in classifications was going from 5 kingdoms (Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists, and Bacteria) to 3 kingdoms: Eubacteria, Archaebacteria, and Eukaryota (everything besides bacteria). This came about from the discovery of Archaebacteria, which are completely different from the bacteria we usually see, and from finding that bacteria have so much previously unknown genetic diversity.

Interestingly, in the new classification animals and fungi are very closely related, which makes sense if you consider that the simplest animal is a sea sponge.

no. DNA takes too long and is expensive. It is only use in extreme cases, so in a way yeah, but mostly its a visual thing.
