That is an interesting question. What's interesting about my answer is I was thinking about something similar as well. You know the state that I live in the United states is Utah and England is about the same size as my own state. As of United states we have 50 states and it takes all those 50 states to be as powerful as we are. But I like to say that England is as powerful as the US, and so for the size of England and how well their economy, military power, and the technologies and great universities and being the land mass size it is, United Kingdom is definately powerful.

It's name will always be Great Britain, but that is only to do wiht the fact that it is made up of several different parts. It lost the Greatness in terms of a world power years ago when the comonwealth broke up.

Great Britain is still great in its heart, tolerance, and social responsibility. Great Britain also remains a supporter of its emancipated bastard child, the USA.
Also, from the religous perspective, as long as there are the spiritual ideals presented by the Church of England, and those reside in the minds of enough of the people, no enemy on earth can sink her.
[Admittedly I am biased toward the CofE, I am an Anglican, though not seen often in church, myself!]

Quatros Ninos - joke answer yes ? Small minded view.

Is the weather what makes a country great ? Laters. If you think American food is great this must be a joke. Maybe we just didn't take to you.

What makes Britain great still ? History - not the history of blood and misery, colonialism and slavery, but the history of education, science, language, sport enjoyed by the globe, and humour - the British sense of humour, and we haven't stolen everything that makes us great - we just are.

After Tony Blair is done playing as Bush's lapdog, it will be known as "The Empire Formerly Known as Great Britain", kinda like that Prince thing a few years back. Alternatively, "Pretty Good, But Not Great" Britain.

We will always be Great Britain in name, and I hope we will return to being a Great country too. Things are going down hill, but we can reverse that trend.
