In Scotland we've had the ban nearly a year. I am a smoker + think that it should be banned in eating places BUT left to the 'non food' pub owners to decide, as ultimately the public will make the final choice by choosing to go or not to go to that pub. Work places should have to provide a place for smokers, even for the first couple of years to 'ween' the smokers off. It's very hard to just stop. Its like taking a mobile phone off a teenager, they can't live without it + get very irate + stroppy! (Try in on a teenager,it's true !)The older generation are suffering (esp with our weather) + it's a bit degrading being made to stand outside in the street to have a ciggie ! Weddings + xmas parties are a pain...those speeches ...with no ciggie! standing in the rain in open toes + strappy dress, not pretty. Some good banter outside though, sometimes more fun than inside, we smokers chat away to folk that we've never met as we puff away outside! As for pubs not loosing out...rubbish, our local is well down on takings since the ban + last night hardly anyone in it. Saturday night with no punters. Ouch. What happened to PEOPLES RIGHT TO CHOOSE?

First if your company is a limited company the vehicles are not yours. You can verify this if the company fails. They become part of the company assets and you as now are a company employee.
If you smoke in your car with your wife and children then you are not a good father as you are subjecting them to a death inducing cocktail of chemicals in the smoke. The ban means that I can at last visit my local pub, a place that because of the smoke was off limits due to my asthmatic condition. Restaurants were always tricky places to visit as the smoke carry over from the smokers section was always there. Three pubs with restaurants in my area went completely no smoking a year ago. To eat in them requires a booking 3 weeks ahead. The bar is always busy every night and they maintain that their profits have increased dramatically.

in a way it's good because smoking IS a nasty habbit and it WILL be a thing of the past one day. however a lot of people can't just stop all of a sudden and considering some people spend at least eight hours in the workplace each day it could get a very stressfull envioronment if their only release is a quick smoke at tea break, which could result in customers suffering if the person/s concerned are not strong will powered. BUT it does mean that if a building and even it's grounds are deemed a non smoking area then the company could get cheaper fire insurance as a significant risk of fire has now been reduced.

A total ban? If that's what you're talking about, I'm against it. I'm not a smoker, but I think adults should have a place to go and smoke at work during breaks. As long as non smokers have a seperate area to take a break.
The cars are owned by the company. They have the right to ban smoking in them.

I love it. I have been asthmatic my entire life and have often had to leave resturants because the smoke caused me to have an attack. I have suffered a collapsed lung on two different occasions. I enjoy going to resturants and other public places and not have to worry about smoking.

I wish they would create a smoking area for those who enjoy smoking that is enclosed in it's own area. I also wish that I didn't have to walk through the smoking that happens right outside the door of the establishment.

As a smoker I have no problem with laws that ban smoking in work and public places..I agree with smokers who say they have a right to smoke but I also understand people have more of right not to inhale my smoke..As far as smoking in a car with children..well I think that's common sense not to !!

Everyone who supports a ban on a legal activity should ask themselves how they would feel about a ban on a legal activity they enjoy. That whole thing of "it's ok as long as it doesn't affect me" is total BS. I agree that they should have a seperate place but not an outright ban.

To derek b, what about work.

The smoking ban is most welcome to most people, including some smokers. Those who smoke will find it easier to stop when it is introduced. It is only those who cannot stop who do the whinging.

They say that they enjoy a smoke, when what they really mean is they have to relieve their craving.

Well dont you think it would be a bit irresponsible to smoke around your kids.... mainly because you could be ruining their health.
I often wonder why people smoke when they know that they are slowly commiting suicide, because that is what it really is, you smoke and then your increasing you risk of various fatal diseases.
I think that banning smoking in any public place is a great idea, it stops people who dont smoke having that inflicted on them.
