Clean often. Wipe off your tables and counters after every meal. Sweep your kitchen floor after every meal. Wash dishes after you are finished with them. Vacuum often. Take out your trash often if you throw food waste in the trash. Keep food in plastic or glass containers, or in cans. Mice and rats can eat through paper and cardboard.
If you have pets keep their food in a plastic storage tub, and don't leave their food bowls sitting out. Feed your pet, and when they are done eating, put the excess pet food away and wipe out the food bowl so no food residue remains.
Mice will not stay where there is no food.
Set some traps and then call your landlord about taking care of his pest problem.

I've had great success with this trap in my house:
http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266
I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:
http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp
If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. If you are a kind person, you might also leave a little bird seed or oatmeal for them.
The absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.
It doesn't take much extra effort to be kind. You will feel better and so will the mice! Good luck!

mice has senstive ears, prepare a place for you to go, get a radio & place it where they are most active or a radio in about 2-3 rooms, depending on the size of ur apt. put it on a HARD ROCK channel..mice will leave....if your neighbors are unclean, maybe u can talk to them about doing the same thing. other than this, you need to contact ur landlord and file a complaint..if you decide to move out, remember this, you will take the mice with you. goodluck & ROCK OUT!!!!!!.....i live in the country & this works, i just go our for about 2 hours with radio playing.....no mice here....

A cat is always best but you might not be allowed to have a pet or maybe you are allergic. If you are renting this is not your problem, call the landlord and if he/she does nothing call the health board. If you own, you can purchase traps (live or otherwise) but if you don't want to be bothered call an exterminator.
