I recently re-formatted my hard drive running Windows XP, but when trying to re-install Windows, my PC does not boot from the DVD drive (I went into my BIOS setup and made it highest boot priority, but to no avail). I found a Windows 95 boot disk as well as the System Recovery disc that shipped with the computer, a Windows 98 disc (also came with the computer, was the pre-installed OS), and I have my XP upgrade, so it's going to a pain in the butt to get back to XP, but it's possible. However, the boot disc does not recognize my DVD drive and advises to install the DOS drivers manually. My DVD drive is a NEC DVD-RW DL + and -. Does this DOS driver exist, and if so, how can I find it?

Thank you to everyone who has offered support. I've downloaded both the 98 and XP Floppy Boot disks and will be attempting a second go today. I'll post the results afterward.

Got the XP boot disks today and went through the setup. Computer picked up the DVD drive and everything was a-ok.....untill an error came up saying "Value 0 on the line in Section [SourceDiskFiles] with key "SP1.cab" Upon closer inspection, I failed to notice that my XP contains Service Pack 1, and I downloaded the boot disks for the original release.

Needless to say, I'm kicking myself pretty hard right now.

I'll try this again tomorrow (my only way to get the disks is at school) and this time I'll get THE RIGHT DISKS!

Just download the "Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install" for Window XP:

If they do not detect & install the drivers for your DVD drive then there is another issue.

ok here is what you do

your dvd drive should not make any difference at all a dvd will read cd roms so booting from a dvd with a cd rom in should be no problem at all,

I can't advertise the fact that your XP upgrade will actually boot up and install from the cd without installing 98 there is away to do it. what you will need is all your hardware drivers, on hand, the reason for this is the xp upgrade used the 98 drivers for the hardware
