I allow people to piggy back on my wirless internet in our house and one of the guys is abusing this privledge by downloading on LimeWire all night , most nights. It is a Netgear DG834PN. Is there a reliable way to block lime wire use on the router and is there a way to monitor the traffic flowing through the router?

It's not always that easy to block these programs, they have a tendancy to change ports! I've tried to block a number of programs in the past and found some of them default to port 80 if you block off their default ports. If you block port 80 then you are blocking access to the majority of websites on the Internet! Most programs like Limewire also give the user the option to manually change the ports that are used. There isn't really a reliable way to block these kind of programs completely.

I would ask them to stop using limewire, if they refuse block them from the router or add/change the security settings.

(If you don't have any security on your wireless it could be more than just your housemates using the net as well, secure your network ASAP)

Most home routers do not offer any kind of traffic monitoring. You can usually see who is connected (MAC/IP addresses) thats about it.

Theres always one! did you explain to him that there is only a limited bandwidth?

another way might be to get into his room and reduce the available badwidth limewire uses in the option screen, so he can only ever download and upload using about 5% of your total bandwidth etc

is a fair compromise he he insists on hogging ruining everyones fun on the net

other wise its tiem to set up users for your netgear router and passwords... or alternatively time to shut of the wireless and run some cables through the place, wireless is slow compared to good old fashioned wires anywhooo

the port closing is a start, i woudl talk to him first you are after all doing him a favor unless hes a 7 ft tall skin head the nicely nicely approach maybe the best option

i woudl say "mate if you want to use the net, lime wire only when no one is in teh house because you are killing my net speed, and we know you are only using it for porn, other wise we cut you off like the bad puppy you are"

I have a netgear router and i have created rules to either open or block programs from listening on certain ports.

Enter your router online config page (normally http://192.168.01 or check on the back of your router) and create a rule to block incomming ports.

The ports you need to block are listed in the link below.

The easiest thing to do is talk to him. Even though the only thing you can do is block the port he is using, make it seem like you will cut his computer off completely if he doesnt comply to your rules.
