Shyness is the cause of unhappiness for many people. People’s self-concept has a profound effect on all areas of their lives. Those with high self-esteem usually act with confidence; while those with low self-esteem are likely to be passive and influenced by others. Subsequently, would you provide suggestions to help shy people build up confidence and overcome shyness? Because the more we understand ourselves, the easier we may give our potential a full play.

I am a firm believer in practice makes perfect (or at least close to it!). Maybe start slow. For example, giving the cashier a smile or saying a friendly "hello" to the person that's taking your ticket at the movie theater. To tell you the truth, people can overcome their shyness by being "gutsy".

One must be willing to let go and have a "oh...what the hell" attitude. This attitude may generate some risk taking and allow a shy person to step up to a plate and start conversations at work, at school, etc...

I used to be a big introvert with low self-esteem. I found that with that risk taking attitude and always having a friendly smile, I was able to over-come my shyness completely. I used to be SCARED and nervous, however, because I have engaged in so many conversations ( and yes some were disasters), I found that the more conversations I had, the easier it was to talk to others. But remember, try to smile. I found that not that many people like to talk to someone who looks down or scared to death. Just fake it until you make it.

I'm still working on the self-esteem issue. However, it is getting better. The more I got along with others, the more I became comfortable with showing my true self. The more I was able to be honest with people without fear of looking stupid or being judged, the more confident and comfortable I became with who I am, what I really liked, what my goals in life were, etc... ANyways, that is already too much! Good luck.

Building confidence could be as simple as doing something you enjoy doing. Like going to the gym, playing sports.. Being part of a team. To overcome your shyness, you just have to remember, you aren't the only one!
