The click-of-death happens on regular hard drives as well as zip drives. The sound you hear is the head servo mechanism retracting the heads and repositioning them again in an attempt to shake off any head contamination and re-calibrate the servo.

Once you hear it more than a few times, it means you have had a head crash, since some of the oxide has been scraped off the disk OR a failure of the servo mechanism itself. Your data is most likely gone. What is left can be recovered in a cleanroom environment for about $500, so it better be worth it.

There is ONE thing that sometimes works. Freeze the zip disk overnight in a ziplock bag. Put it back in and quickly see if you can get the drive to mount and pull what data off you can until it starts clicking again. This works because the freezing changes the tolerance levels on the drive material and mechanisms just enough to sometimes make the difference from working a little while or not at all. Last resort.

First for me to answer you need to explain what the "click of death" is i haven't used a zip in a LOOOOOOONG time.

and my advice would be to git a external hard drive to back up your computer much easier and it wont cost as much as all those CD's.
